Air Abrasion

We are proud to offer a companion tool to the traditional dental drill in our office. Air abrasion is a newer technology that can be used in certain clinical situations. Air abrasion works by blowing air and a fine mist of sand. It is quiet and does not produce any heat as it cleans the tooth.

Air abrasion is best used for small, superficial cavities in the pits and grooves of teeth without existing fillings. It can also be used in minor repairs of existing composite resin fillings. We also use this method to clean out the plaque and debris out of the pits and grooves in the back teeth before we place a sealant. The action of the sand roughens the enamel surface, which in turn enhances the bond of the sealant or composite filling to the tooth. In most situations, it is not necessary to use local anesthesia with this technology.

Air abrasion can be a very effective tool used in certain situations. It is ideal for children and teenagers, and is a good option for adults when possible.
